Energy saving investments (ESI) is a fund established in August 2012 by Equitix with UK Green Investment Bank (UKGIB) as cornerstone investor. GIB has been established by HM Government as part of the UK’s progression towards a green economy. ESI has £100 million of capital to invest in projects in the Non Domestic Energy Efficiency (NDEE) Sector and has made a number of investments as outlined below.

Equitix Energy Efficiency Fund

Equitix Energy Efficiency Fund (EEEF) has been established to invest in energy efficiency projects across the UK in parallel with Energy Saving Investments. EEEF final close was in April 2015. £151.5 million.

Project Gaia Gaia 17.5 August 2016

In August 2016, Equitix’s EEF acquired the Gaia Waste Wood Biomass to Heat project which consists of two 5.8MW boilers with an aggregate capacity of 11.6MW. Construction of the plant was complete at acquisition and operations commenced in early 2015. Project Gaia has a 20-year contract with Greenergy Biofuels Ltd which would see Greenergy's biofuel manufacturing site in lmmingham (Lincolnshire) convert its heat source from traditional fossil fuel supply to biomass. The Greenergy site produces biodiesel from used and recovered cooking oils for use in the transport fuels market and is the market leader in its sector. The biodiesel is blended with fossil based diesel as part of the obligations Greenergy and other fuel suppliers have under the Road Transport Fuel Obligation.

Equitix ESI (Wrexham) Green Plan Energy 25 April 2016

Equitix acquired a 100% in a 4.8MWe waste wood project situated on Wrexham Industrial Estate in North Wales. The plant is being built to be CHP ready and will also provide heat to an adjacent site which will be used as a processing, drying and storage facility. The project uses proven technology and a standard combustion line, feeding a multi-stage condensing steam turbine.

Ignis Biomass Regen 10 January 2016

Project Ignis is an operational CHP plant and district heating network providing heat to the local distillery and district heating network in Wick, Scotland. It also provides heat to Wick Community College Campus and the NHS Hospital. Equitix owns 100% of the investment and has plans to expand and develop the business to include an additional CHP plant and uprated power supply.

Equitix ESI CHP (Nottingham) Limited Mycock Associates Ltd and Pinnacle Power Ltd 30 Sep-15

Equitix ESI CHP (Nottingham) relates to the construction of a 6.8 MW waste wood fired biomass project in Widmerpool, Nottingham. The plant will initially be electricity only but will be built with the necessary infrastructure to enable it to run as a CHP. It is a joint project developed by both Mycock Associates and Pinnacle Power Ltd. Once the plant is up and running it will be operated by Veolia Energy Services Ltd for a 15 year maintenance contract and has a long term PPA with GDF Suez. The plant will be fuelled by waste wood from sustainable sources from Waring Waste, who are co-located at the site and Mick George Limited.

Equitix ESI CHP (Sheff) Limited UYE Ltd 30 Jul-15

Equitix ESI CHP (Sheff) relates to the construction of a 6.5 MW waste wood fired biomass project in Sheffield, Yorkshire. The plant will initially be electricity only but will be built with the necessary infrastructure to enable it to run as a CHP scheme and feed into the local district heating network. The project will be fuelled using sustainably sourced waste wood from three different UK based waste wood suppliers. UYE Ltd will offtake the power that is generated under a 15 year PPA. The plant will be operated by Veolia Energy Services Ltd who will provide a full 15 year maintenance package.

Equitix ESI Retrofit Limited Various 5 Jun-15

Equitix ESI Retrofit relates to the development of a portfolio of energy efficient LED installations. The business model is to target a range of installations where carbon savings can be achieved. The installations typically have a high energy consumption, use inefficient lighting and incur significant lighting costs. The initial pipeline of projects predominantly includes local authority buildings and large industrial and manufacturing facilities. The first project is at GKN, a large aerospace manufacturer based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

Equitix Sharc Sharc Caledonia Ltd 4 Jun-15

Sharc Caledonia project relates to the development of a portfolio of sewerage source heat pump installations by Sharc Energy. The Sharc technical solution is novel in its application but the solution is based on long established, well proven technologies. The Sharc business model is to target a range of installations with high heat use located close to major mains sewers which will provide the heat source for the heat pump systems. Their initial pipeline of projects is mainly at public sector, social infrastructure locations and has been developed as part of a strategic joint venture with Scottish Water. The first installation will be at Borders College, a higher education facility based in Galashiels, Scotland.

Boxed ESCO Service Limited Fontenergy Construction Services Ltd 5 Dec-14

BESL has been established to supply heat to the social housing sector in the UK by way of an energy performance contract. The developer Fontenergy Construction Services Ltd has developed a containerised heating system (CEU) that can utilise gas or biomass or a combination of both. The project involves the installation of 28 CEUs for Places for People (PFP) to replace some of their existing boilers. Baxi Heating UK is responsible for the installation of the boilers.

Equitix ESI Biomass (Norfolk) Limited Lumicity Ltd 24.75 Feb-14

" The project involves the installation of 179 small scale biomass-fired boilers on 21 Bernard Matthews sites across Norfolk, Suffolk & Lincolnshire. The efficient biomass-to-heat boilers will replace existing LPG-fired boilers, saving Bernard Matthews money on their energy bills and significant carbon savings. The project is being developed by Lumicity, an established biomass development company. Baxi Heating UK and Armstrong Integrated are responsible for the boiler installation and the long term operation of the boilers. Bernard Matthews will provide the fuel over the lifetime of the contract. "

GG Eco Energy Ltd GG Eco Solutions Ltd 5 Jul-13

GG Eco Energy Ltd will fund the installation of a pipeline of new biomass-to-heat projects, primarily those that are off-Gas Grid that can benefit from ‘price-certain’ long term heat supply with significant cost and carbon savings relative to fuel oil. The first project in the pipeline at Culford School is operational. GG Eco Solutions are responsible for the development, installation and maintenance of the boilers.

Balcas SPV No2. Ltd Balcas Ltd 5 Jul-13

This project relates to the development of a portfolio of new biomass-to-heat installations by Balcas. The applications targeted are off-Gas Grid fuel oil users with high heat usage levels that can benefit from ‘price-certain’ long term heat supply and significant cost and carbon savings. The initial pipeline of projects is mainly at Scottish Distilleries, close to Balcas’ Invergordon pellet plant and the first installation, is at the Tomatin distillery just south of Inverness. Balcas are responsible for the development, installation and maintenance of the boilers.

Roundwood Energy Ltd Pinnacle Power Ltd 10 Apr-13

The project relates to the development of a portfolio of 20+ biomass boiler installations in a variety of public and private locations across the UK, including schools, care homes and rural applications. Small scale biomass-fired boilers are being installed on site to replace or back-up existing oil-fired boilers. The heat generated is sold under long term 20 year Heat Offtake Agreements. Pinnacle Power Limited are responsible for the development, installation and maintenance of the boilers.
